Did you know that accredited pharmacists throughout Australia are able to provide vaccination services for adult over 18 years old? Our accredited pharmacists at selected Advantage Pharmacies are able to provide vaccination services to protect against influenza, whooping cough and measles in some cases.

Immunisation protects people against harmful infections before they come into contact with them.  It uses your body’s natural defenses to build resistance to specific infections. Immunisation is a safe and effective way of giving protection against disease. Immunisation not only protects you and your family, but also the whole community by helping to control serious diseases.

Influenza

Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a highly contagious viral infection. Flu symptoms include fever, a cough, sore throat, fatigue, muscle aches, headaches, runny nose and watery eyes. The symptoms may sound familiar, however the flu is not the same as a common cold

Each year, the flu virus strains can change. The best protection against the flu is annual vaccination with a vaccine that targets the most recent and common circulating strains. If you are immunised, you are less likely to catch the flu, reduce the severity of flu symptoms, and prevent passing it on to those close to you.

Flu protection from the vaccine takes up to two weeks to develop and it is best to get vaccinated before the flu begins spreading seasonally. Ask your Advantage Pharmacist on how to get vaccinated today!

Whooping Cough

It’s easy to think of whooping cough (pertussis) as a disease that only affects children and babies. But whooping cough in adults is more common than you might think. In 2016, over 20,000 Australians caught whooping cough and over 8,499 of these people were adults.

Many Australians have been vaccinated as a child, infant or adolescent. However, vaccinations received in childhood do not provide adequate protection against the disease in adult years. This is because immunity after vaccination diminishes over time, therefore leaving people at a greater risk of catching the disease. Ask your Advantage Pharmacist on how to get vaccinated today!

Measles

Our selected pharmacists in Queensland are able to provide adult vaccination services to protect against measles.

Measles is an acute, highly infectious illness caused by the measles virus. Measles can cause serious complications such as pneumonia (lung infection) and encephalitis (inflammation of the brain). It may also cause middle ear infection.

Protection against measles is given through a combined MMR vaccine. Two doses are needed to provide a high level of protection. The measles (MMR) vaccine is highly recommended for all adults that haven’t already had two doses of the vaccine previously. It is also highly recommended for healthcare workers and for people who work with children. Ask your QLD Advantage Pharmacist on how to get vaccinated today!
